The best definition I ever heard about being successful was in Earl Nightingale’s famous radio broadcast entitled “The Strangest Secret”. Here’s what he said:
“Success is the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal.”
Here’s the recording from the “Our Changing World” broadcast over half a century ago, but even more enlightening today than it was then:

I’ll let you draw your own conclusions on what he has to say about being successful but here’s my take on what he is saying to us, and an appreciation of how the reticular activating system works is fundamental to fully understanding what he is saying.
Being Successful Is All About What We Think About
Before I go on, I need you to do something. Please think really carefully about what I have been saying to you about how your RAS decides what data you will receive into your mind, and the data it will block out.
You need to take total control of your “Executive Secretary” and ensure that it knows absolutely that the information I am sharing with you here is foundational, essential information that will change the outcome of your life for the better, so long as you embrace the concepts and act upon them.
The person who will become successful is the person who has determined exactly what they want to achieve, or become, and is working progressively towards that goal.
Unless you have the objective clearly defined, have worked out the plan that will get you there, and are working progressively towards achieving that goal, then by default you will fail…
Being successful is not always about money. In fact focusing on money is generally counter productive. Success is about being honest to yourself and following your own passion.
With regard to money, the important lesson to learn is that money is attracted to value. If you are offering value to society then the money will follow. Success always comes first, just as the heat comes from the fire only after you have put the wood in.
Yes, money is important, we need it to keep the food on the table and the roof over our heads, but what is far more important is our integrity.
What is important to you? What have you always wanted to do, see, become or achieve…
That’s the question you need to answer because, until you have created a goal for yourself, then being successful is just a pipe dream. You have no yardstick upon which to measure your progress.
The Secret To Being Successful
The secret is that there is no secret.
The truth is that we become what we think about.
Jim Rohn best defined the human brain as an incredibly fertile garden. We will always reap the harvest based on the seeds that we sow.
Our thoughts are the seeds, so be careful what you think about. In his immortal words, “We need to become good at one of two things, sowing in the Spring…or begging in the Autumn”.
Being Successful Requires Thinking Big
The human brain is the most powerful cybernetic goal seeking organism in the Universe but it can only act based on the data that you provide…and that input data comes from your thoughts and the endless stream of self talk that we all indulge in daily.
Don’t set it small tasks, don’t focus on small goals…that’s like taking a sledge hammer to crack nuts!
Just as if you were planning a three week vacation, start planning your life.
Where do you want to go? How are you going to get there and when…
You would be incredibly diligent in planning that three week trip, it would be on your mind every waking moment, you’d be there on time, you’d have everything you need, the taxi would be booked, the hotel and the day trips would be organised and there would be absolutely no chance of you missing the alarm clock on the day of departure…
…nothing will go wrong because the thought of the trip will become the dominant thought that you live with every single moment until you fly!
We need to give our dreams and our entrepreneurial ideas and aspirations exactly the same focus to turn them in to reality.
“We become what we think about all day long.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
